Warning: Not for the young. Books contain adult subject matter. Graphic scenes -gore, violence-, adult language and situations. Movies of these books would be rated R. Please don't say I didn't warn you.

Did you devour the Harry Potter series? Love shows like Supernatural? Enjoy mysteries? The paranormal and things that go bump in the night? If so, then may I recommend to you The Dresden Files written by Jim Butcher, author of the Codex Alera. Harry Dresden is a wizard working in Chicago. Find him in the phone book, he's the only one under wizard. With fifteen books in the series so far and more to come, there's plenty to read. Harry faces off with mobsters, monsters, vampires, and werewolves in his adventures, and all with a wry sense of humor. He's smart and snarky, far from perfect, and I've fallen in love with his stories. I envision his movie self being played by Paul Rudd.
When I picked up the first Dresden novel, it was after I had read the Codex Alera which by the same author, but is very different from this series. Codex takes place in a Roman Empire like world and people have the ability to summon elemental companions. Codex is well worth the read. I remembered that The Dresden Files had been a short-lived series on the Sci-Fi channel and at first I was hesitant, but the t.v. show and the books are very different and that's a good thing. I found books with great story-telling, an everyman's hero, and a lot of laugh out loud moments. I was hooked.
This isn't your standard sword and sorcery tale, though I love those all the same and could recommend a few if that's your style. But give Harry a try. He never attended Hogwarts, but he's still one heck of a wizard.
