The Problem With SSO Currency
The currency system in SSO has always been a bug bear of mine but more so in recent times. I don’t see many people talk about it, so I thought I’d try and highlight some of the main reasons it’s so fundamentally broken.
First off, what’s the difference between Jorvik Shillings and Star Coins. In Star Stables own words:
Star Coins are the main currency in Jorvik and can be used to pay for in-game items, horses, and features.
(Whereas) Some items, such as clothes or tack for your horse, can be paid for with Jorvik Shillings.
i.e if you want to play the game, that you’ve already paid for, you also have to funnel yet more money into that game to access, in Star Stables own words in-game items, horses, and features. So basically everything.
But you can still use Jorvik Shillings to buy things, I hear you cry! Well that would be fine, until you realise that Star Stable have made earning Jorvik Shillings so frustratingly slow and the price so incredibly high that it’s impossible to gather enough for the items you might want, especially when you take into account the time constraints on some event items.
But Star Stable gives us a weekly allowance of Star Coins, just save that up, I hear you shout. Again, this is fine, until you remember that in Star Stables own words, Star Coins are the MAIN currency in the game so they’re expecting you to use a lot of it… for everything. How far do you think 100sc goes in a week? You could save it up, for let’s say a horse. It’d take you a minimum of 10 weeks without spending any SC for most of the horses. But you’d then be missing out on everything else that this main currency buys you.
So just use Jorvik Shillings to buy things whilst you save up your Star Coin. Oh yeah but we can’t save enough because SSO have made it so difficult to earn them.
So what’s the answer? Funnel more money into a game we’ve already funnelled money into and buy Star Coins. This isn’t a one time occurrence. Star Stable expect you to constantly and continually funnel money into a game for the right to play it and then again for the right to experience the majority of content within it.
This right here is my biggest issue with the game. It’s why I refuse to ever put another single penny into it. A game that you have to pay to play, should not also have a main currency that you have to pay for to access the majority of content. One top in game I was looking at was 100sc, so it’d cost £3.50 in real money. One top. ONE ITEM = £3.50. For the whole set, clothes and tack including, it’s cost you around £20 real money. Most horses will also set you back £20. Yes you could wait for double star coin weekends, but promotional deals shouldn’t be used as an excuse for SSO’s treatment of their players.
I’m not saying that the game shouldn’t have a payed for premium currency or that players shouldn’t have to use that premium currency for more premium items like horses and pets. But I should not be forced to put my hand in my purse every time I play this game.
No other game I have ever played has this mentality. If it’s a pay to play there’s a free main currency and a premium payed one for exclusive item. Likewise if it’s free to play the main currency is usually one you have to pay for. The conjunction of both within one game is greedy and inhumane for their players.
Unfortunately SSO have no incentive to change this. Because for some god knows reason people keep idiotically funding Star Stables greed. When will we say enough? When will we demand better treatment from a game we’ve invested so much time and love into?
If this is a topic that you feel strongly about too, please send a message to SSO telling them how you feel. Don’t suffer in silence. And take charge and demand change with your wallet. Big companies like SSO only ever respond to one thing, money. If enough of us refuse to take part in this insanity, they’ll be forced to do something.
