I started getting into anime last year (2017) and I kinda can't stop re-watching my favorite series so far XD While they are called cartoons they are far from what we westerners think of when someone says "cartoon". These Japanese animated tv shows can be kid friendly or they can have brutal stories that are far from a traditional western cartoon. Most anime are based off of manga (which is the Japanese term for comics) of the same name. You don't need to be able to read Japanese characters to read the manga, there's translations thankfully
The only tip I'd give if you are going to start reading manga, remember that it reads right to left. It took me a bit to get used to it, but now the side effect is reading western comics in the wrong order XP With that introduction down...
What anime have you watched? Did you enjoy it? Got any suggestions of your favorites?
My list of anime I've watched and are my personal favs is..
- Haikyuu!! (A sports anime about volleyball. This one stands at the top of the list for me because I love the characters, the whole team and other teams you meet have their own charisma! The music is perfect for getting you hyped for a match and you learn about about different volleyball plays throughout the anime. The art style is easy to look at too)
- My Hero Academia "Boku no Hero Academia" (I just got into this one so I've watched all current seasons (2 right now, 3rd season is coming next month (April 7th)) and I caught up with the manga. It became a quick fav, the music and art style are similar to Haikyuu!!. I know the composer is the same, not sure if the studio that makes it is too. The characters are also great and you get attached to them. When Star Stable announced the sso super hero tag, I was kinda contemplating on drawing my sso character in their hero costumes (but I was lazy and not good at drawing). This one is definitely high on my recommendation list!)
- Yona of the Dawn "Akatsuki no Yona" (My friend held a Rabbit room (a website where you can host a video or movie and people can come in and watch it with you and chat). It was me, her, and another friend of ours who also didn't know about the series. We got hooked on it! Out of the 24 episodes that last for around 24 minutes each, we got through 21 before calling it for the night! The story, the characters, oh man I instantly fell in love! A runaway princess and her childhood friend who's her bodyguard have to flee after her father is killed. They have to meet up with the four dragon warriors and that's unfortunately where season 1 ends after saving a port town from the ruler who kidnaps and sells women. The manga however has many funny moments, epic moments, tragic moments, and it's just all around great to watch and read. It's a perfect mix of comedy and seriousness. I'm hoping this one gets more seasons!)
- Attack on Titan "Shingeki no Kyojin" (A pretty popular one that you might've heard of before. I was not prepared for the feels in the first episode omg! and I can see why a lot of people like it. I like that it has very human emotions that you can understand both sides, no one is the "big bad" when you learn about their side. There's lots of emotions when watching this anime, excitement during an epic scene, sadness during a tragedy, chills when a scene has the music and animation and voice acting working together so well. It's an experience but worth it, but be warned of the gore!)
Other anime I've watched that I've also liked are...
- Violet Evergarden
- Blue Exorcist "Ao no Exorcist"
- The Devil is a Part-Timer
- Noragami
- Natsume and the Book of Friends "Natsume Yuujinchou"
- Death Parade
I'm gonna also include the two anime movies I've watched last year
Koe no Katachi "A Silent Voice"- It's about the main character who was a bully to a deaf girl in middle school. When she transferred to another school, he was then bullied and in high school he tried to off himself. He goes to find her to make amends for what he did. It's a very bitter sweet movie and the message is wonderful
Kimi no Na Wa "Your Name"- It's where a boy from the city and girl from the country swap bodies and they try to figure out how and why it's happening. This movie has absolutely gorgeous scenery! The music is great and it's also quite emotional at parts. I remember watching it with my friends and even through voice chat we could tell we were all tearing up
