A year after the fifth soul rider helped save Jorvik, all of the soul riders had started to pursue more girls like the fifth girl. Apparently, there were many. So many, in fact, that you'd just assume the Soul Riders were actually just a club that gave riding lessons. In fact, that's what most people think they are now. The Soul Riders were okay with that, until a boy named Wolf came into the picture.
Wolf made fun of all the Soul Rider girls. "Who even wants horses now that there's cars?!" he taunts. He pulls their hair, and steals their riding boots. He's even convinced some more boys to make fun of them with him.
The soul horses watch in vain. They do not tell their riders, because they are scared. But they know that Wolf is not just a boy. Wolf is something else. Something more sinister.
In fact, they have even gone as far as to dub him "Garnok's Child" in secret. They do believe he is, because they have seen him lurking in the night, doing strange things. Things that Garnok would do, if he had a physical form.
"I've heard Garnok Child. He makes growling noises all the time, and he looks at us hungrily. I think I know what he is doing." Cocokiss pipes in. We call her Coco. She is a chestnut Morgan. We all like her.
"Me too. Not the 'doing' part, though." I said. I'm a North Swedish Horse, a black one. My rider calls me Duskwish. My friends call me Dusk, though.
"Well, I think he wants our riders to abandon us so he can eat us!" Cocokiss whinnied loudly. Everyone turned to look at her. "Or worse, he wants us to capture us for something really, really bad."
"I've heard them considering behind closed doors." One horse said. Another shook his head. "No way!" I said loudly. "Our riders would never do that!"
"Yes, they will. Except for the original five. The original five will be safe, because their riders love them beyond measure. But us, I do not think we are safe." Ravenwings said. He's a black Icelandic horse. We all just call him Raven. "My rider buys new horses all the time. She doesn't ride me a lot anymore. Her favorite is that stupid black friesan stallion." He turned his head sadly. "I'm jealous of him sometimes."
I shook my head. What would we do? What could we do? "Are you suggesting we escape?" I asked sadly. "Yes." Raven and Coco say at the same time. I couldn't believe my ears! We couldn't leave our riders to the abuse of Wolf!
I think Coco knew what I was thinking, because she started to act like it. She's that kind of horse. "I know you're probably thinking about our riders, Dusk, but please! They can't do this with us. I think we have to do this without them. It'll be too dangerous! And they have a lot to go through. I just know we have to do this by ourselves. It's a feeling in my heart." I thought about it for a while. My mom always told me to follow my heart. So I decided I should. And my heart said to agree.
"Yes," I agreed. "Let's go."
Chapter 1
Hooves heavy with sadness, we all went on. The humid, rainy air brought some relief to my coat which was burning in the earlier day's heat. Now rain fell, and silence fell among us too.
I decided to break the silence, to lighten the mood up. "Well, I think the original five will do it. They always have. And if our riders get corrupted, we'll be the backup for the five! I think this choice was smart. We have to, if we want to save our riders."
Raven shook his head. "I think I'd rather not go back to my rider. Something happened to her, you know? She was great--she used to be great, then one day she joined a riding club, I think. She rode me for the first few days, then dumped me for some friesan. All I saw was her competing with him, then I saw her talking to her club. She suddenly cursed and made a lot of bad jokes, like, not the good kind of bad. The bad bad kind. The friesan was a good dude, but my rider.. she isn't anymore.."
I almost accidentally lost my footing on the slippery trail we were walking through when Raven said that. To be honest, I just thought it was her buying tons of horses, not that, too. I had seen my fair share of riders like that. They seemed to be appearing out of nowhere. I didn't understand it.
Coco sighed. "Come on guys, I think I see the abbey up ahead." I could tell, too. It was the good old abbey's ruins, with the stone graves and the old stone church that was falling apart. I could see the trees, too, with their leaves damp from the rain and dripping with it.
I stepped cautiously into the abbey's walls, Coco and Raven following behind me. Despite stone being a strong material, the abbey's roof had been destroyed over time, so it offered little protection from the rain, but it did help with the wind. I lowered my body onto the damp, but soft dirt ground. Coco lay beside me, giving me a comforting glance. "It's alright." she murmured to me. "We'll figure something out. We can help. We can do something, and we don't need powers to do that something, I'm certain." She nudged me, then turned away lowering her head on the ground. Looking behind me, I saw Raven looking through a hole in the wall. I couldn't see his expression, but I could feel the sadness radiating from him. Maybe he was thinking about how, once upon a time, his rider was a great person, not polluted by the bad people of this world. I decided to leave that case alone for now, though, and I let my head drop to the ground, closing my eyes.
Then I was asleep.
And that's where I went wrong.
Chapter 3
I awoke with a jolt, panic soon coming to my mind. It took me a moment to realize what was going on: Coco was missing, and Raven was fighting of a bunch of.. wolves? But those weren't normal wolves. They all had dull, gray eyes, devoid of emotion. Why they hadn't gotten to me yet was probably because of Raven. I ran over, trying to kick the wolves and help Raven. A wolf jumped onto my back, then another onto my leg, and I bucked, managing to get the leg wolf off but the wolf on my back continued to stay on. I looked sideways and noticed Raven was busy as well. I couldn't go down like this. I couldn't let Raven go down like this, either. I ran through the 'doorway' of the church, turning a bit to the side so that my flank would clash with the stone. The wolf clashed with the flank on the stone, and although it was painful, I managed to get the wolf off, who whimpered before passing out. I galloped to Raven, clashing in to him to get the wolves off of him. They all fell off, growling at me.
This was my chance. I went up to the wolves, trying to stomp on them. I managed to stomp on a few, causing them to run off, but some others jumped onto my legs, biting and howling. I neighed in panic, bucking in futile attempts. Raven was having trouble as well, but the pain was too much, and I passed out.
Voices murmured as I blinked, forcing my eyes open. Two gray-eyed wolves tilted their heads at me as I opened my eyes, and I soon noticed a boy pacing around the room, murmuring. I attempted to move, but I realized I couldn't move my legs. I winnied for Raven, and two brown eyes replied back: "I'm okay, just can't move."
"You really are hard to see in the dark." I said, looking at him, which at the moment 'him' looked like two brown marbles floating in space. He laughed a little bit, despite our predicament. "Yeah, just let your eyes adjust."
I trusted his advice and soon the room got a little brighter. I could actually make up his shape now. He looked like he was laying down, with nothing holding him back. How could we not move then? Still, the boy paced around the room, and I realized he looked a lot like Wolf. Okay, his name probably has a real big reason now, but this was too simple. Wolves wouldn't be that calm and obedient with a human, especially a child. I was convinced now Wolf, or Garnok's Child, was really related to Garnok somehow and was using some powers to get these wolves to do his bidding. Either way, at the moment, it seemed I had lots of time to think about getting out of here.
Just, I didn't know with what I could get out of here with so Raven and I can get out of here intact.
(Sorry if this is rather short. I am trying, but I'm really not the best author.)
