I am pretty sure that this forum is dead but what are your thoughts on the new characters?
I really don't want them. I know that the characters will need an update eventually, but they did it so poorly. The new character models look like children where as the ones we have now are older teen/young adults. Has anyone noticed that they look big? Like, I am not talking weight/body type big, but just... big? Like our characters now are shorter compared to NPCs and look smaller on the horses which I like, but the new ones look really big. It looks strange considering they look like little children too.
As far as the body types go, I won't really get into it. They only added a handful of ones for the beta testers which I kinda wish they would have waited until they had all the body types so we could see them all. SSO has said that they plan to add more, and I really hope this means they add smaller ones. They want diversity, it has to go both ways. All in all, my biggest issue is that they look like kids though.
Also, most of the beta testers ended up being public figures with youtube and tik tok channels. I guess this is good considering it allows for more people to see the content... however all I have heard from the content creators is "wow this is amazing" "this is so good" when most of the comments disagree. I really hope these creators read the comments and communicate it to SSO. They have the most power in this situation.

The beta characters are a good first step in updating characters because they seem more "in line" with the updated characters already in game (i.e. Soul Riders). It is not perfect by any means, but I think it fits the art style SSO has been going for recently, although it will take some time to get used to (as with any change really). But based on the videos I've watched, I haven't seen the beta characters compared with the already updated characters in game, so I do agree that they do look out of place with the older modeled characters. They probably will continue to look out of place when officially released, unless SSO also plans to update every single character beforehand.
As for the beta testing itself, I think SSO could have been more clearer about expectations when the beta test first launched because many people were confused. Even though SSO has posted information about the beta test, i.e. the blog post (which did mention details such as "The six finalized body shapes," 12 face options, etc.) or the SSO Help article (i.e. "You might notice the character is not holding the reins"), people probably don't remember or know, respectively. A good solution (if they didn't want to tell the public) would be to be (as close to) crystal clear with the beta testers about beta character expectations. It seemed like a few YouTubers were confused in the beginning too.
Q: Would you rather them push back the character update to, say 2024, for them to add even more body types, faces, customizations, etc. than what's currently shown OR have a less bugging/more complete version of what's currently shown released in 2023?
-- TLDR: I can see the beta characters as a WIP and they seem ok so far compared to what choices they had previously. (Everything can always do "better.") Beta testing execution could have been more clear/smooth.

I know this is only beta and anything can happen, but I agree with Lina.
Personaly I would like them to push back update, if it means that they add more options and make sure that everything is polished.
Also I would be happy if we get some confirmation that there will be more, for example, body types. Like, for a hundred percent, because nn the past they gave us a reason to be suspicious about this update and generally to quality of their work.
Just look how they remade friesian horses and how they reacted to feedback people gave them. I don't hate Friesians but lets be honest they could be done a lot, lot better. We all saw that they didn't put much effort into their work and asked them to fix it, but they didn't react and It's such a shame, because Friesians are one of the most beloved breeds in the game. But in fact, they just ignored feedback they have got. By the way, I'd rather them fix Friesians and other "broken horses", bugs, glitches, and maybe finally fit the new tack to other generation 3 horses (remember that Andalusians, connemara and others are still waiting), than get another five/six breeds in next few months, but this is for another discussion. Back to the topic. I'm a bit worried that in this case It can be the same way and knowing SSO this can be all that we get in the end. Maybe I'm too much pessimistic, but I wouldn't be surprised.
I agree with everything said. I also want to bring in the fact that they’re releasing new tack with every new horse that only fits that one horse. They’re basically digging their own grave with how mucu work they’re giving themselves. At least, at the rate that they work now. Hollow Woods was supposed to be updated back in 2020, but that update was apparently postponed. The beta characters are an issue because they’re incredibly stylized. If you look at the game from 2011-2022 you’ll see that SSO is spotty when it comes to having a set style. Within a few years, these characters and all of the updated areas will be considered outdated. In my opinion, SSO needs to choose a style and focus on producing quality content.

I agree with all that’s said above, but I especially agree with focusing on things they’ve already released. They keep adding, and adding, and adding, but most of what they add doesn’t apply to half the game. I was shocked when most of my horses in my stable (which I wouldn’t consider old at all) couldn’t even wear the new tack. I understand if certain breeds can’t wear tack related to culture and such (like the bridles for the Marwaris), but basic update western saddles, for example, should be wearable on all Gen 3 horses at least.
SSO has become messy, and I cant help but feel like all these new releases are only a money grab. Why else would they continue to release horses, tack, etc without filling the holes in the previous updates? This doesn’t apply to characters (because I sure hope we don’t have to buy our characters), but the fact still remains.
